This game is made by Y/CJ/Y, the same devs as Post Void, which I also reviewed and also gave a 9, because Y/CJ/Y is just way too good at making fucking banger games.
Ever since I played the demo of this game I was so hyped for it, the whole idea/setting of the game world and story, combined with the extremely fun gameplay which makes you (here it comes) build your own deck of abilities and items, had me hooked immediately.
(this is out of the top of my head so may not be 101% correct) Basically, you're a young adult, you just got your drivers license, and just got your first car. Your friends invited you to a festival quite a few cities away, and you go on a drive to get there.
The premise is pretty simple, but a LOT can happen along the way, you can pick up hitchhikers, go on many different quests short and long, explore forests or the city on foot, and there are many endings that do not result in you going to the festival at all, so while probably most of your playthroughs will start with the mission of getting to the festival, most of them won't end like that, giving the game an almost guaranteed sense of unpredictability an new-ness on your first 3-5 playthroughs (depending on how many hitchhikers you encounter and events you trigger)
The "combat" gameplay is also incredibly fun and engaging, while at times being very satisfying or very terrifying
NEVER DRINK AND DRIVE!!!!!!. The "combat" in this game, which is also the main thing you'll be keeping yourself busy with while driving, are the road events. This can be many things, a cyclist in front of you, a muddy road, getting lost, or a very majestic falcon flying in front of your car.
During these events you will take turns in trying to remove the threats the game throws at you, which can be Energy, Gasoline, Durability or Money threats. All of which can be removed with different abilities from you or the hitchhikers in your car, and with the items in your glovebox. I really like the road events in this game. While sometimes tough and sometimes (although rarely without my own fault) damage being unavoidable, these events are a very tactic driven mini puzzle you have to solve with the abilities/items you acquired, and you're not on a time limit, meaning you can take your time and figure it out on your own pace, which I really appreciate. The road events are really fun and pretty easy to get the hang of, without them getting stale.
And then... the music... my god the music in this game is amazing! The game features multiple local Swedish indie bands, many of which are insanely good, and the music that isn't insanely good is still fucking amazing. You start the game with a selection of songs from 2 bands, Westkust and Zimmer Grandioso, but you're able to find music from many more bands/artists. Below is a list of some of my favorite songs from the full OST of the game.
Westkust - Swirl
Westkust - Dishwasher
Westkust - 0700
Zimmer Grandioso - famous chinese short stories
Zimmer Grandioso - cowboy pills
Makthaverskan - Antabus
Makthaverskan - Asleep
Makthaverskan - Outshine
The Honeydrips - Fire We Light
The Honeydrips - In the City
The Honeydrips - There Comes a Time
My Darling YOU! - It's Not Nice to Be Alone in the Fall
My Darling YOU! - Please Don't Talk to Me I Fall in Love so Easily
Mundane - Fast but Lazy
Mundane - Never Change
Holy Now - Wake Up
Holy Now - Places
Fucking Werewolf Asso - Boy Makes Wolf
Fucking Werewolf Asso - Your Ex Doesn't Mark Treasures
I also love little bits of dialogue, you know those few voicelines that give a character so much more personality? This game has a ton of that. Each hitchhiker you pick up has random text lines that can trigger when you drive around with them, ranging from
Spotting fairies in the woods, being nostalgic about your old car, or just saying you look hot while driving. Also one of my favorite lines from this game, which I can practice a bit more myself, has to be from the Artist:
"Silence is death; if you remain silent you die and if you speak you die. so speak and die."
The hitchhikers in this game are amazing in general, you can encounter such a variety of people that can take you on so many different little journeys, and each hitchhiker also comes with their own abilities and buffs/debuffs, making having them around valuable and sometimes also challenging, but so far I've only found one hitchhiker that I actively don't want in my car because of how extreme the downsides are.
Another thing that's incredibly fun about this game is the ability to customize your car, you can earn money through selling stuff or picking up jobs from bars or job agencies, and with that money you can do many different things, one of which being customizing your car. You can do many decorative upgrades like paint and decals/stickers, but you can also add a bunch of modifications that give various upgrades to your car, like having a little more durability from a bullbar, or increasing the amount of songs you can queue at once with the sound system.
Something I also really love is how most performance upgrades are also visible on the car! Things like louvers, spoilers, skirts, bullbars, lights, roofracks, you can really make your car your own with the combination of visual and performance upgrades, making it even more fun to really build your own setup of abilities and car upgrades.
So yeah, I really really really like this game, it's become one of my favorite games of all time, the developers (WHICH IS LITERALLY JUST TWO PEOPLE BY THE WAY) deserve the love, so give it to them!
Final Score:
9/10
