I first came across this game in steam next fest, and was comnpletely hooked within 10 minutes of playing. The mechanics of this game are so much fun, the characters unique and cool, and the artstyle is amazing.
The character selection has already been expanded twice since it's first release, and each character is very unique, consisting of various equally trashy animals, being: (at the time of reviewing) Possum the archer, Raccoon the assassin, Badger the pissed off shovel warrior, Skunk the magician, House Cat the cranky old necromancer, and Squirrel atop a trusty steed, just don't steal his fucking acorns!
(character descriptions from the game itself)
Even the order of the characters you choose has influence on the game, because it's the order in which they get their turns, and it changes where they are on the food minigame, which is basically advanced tetris.
You have to decide where to put pieces that boost certain stats of your characters, and try to clear as many rows at once as possible, becuase it gives a huge bonus to every character!
The game has even more upgrading mechanics in the form of boons, end-of-round upgrades and special items. Boons and upgrades are either new or upgraded abilities for your characters, and some of the combinations you can make with these are extremely powerful. Items are fun too because they are embedded in food-tetris-blocks. meaning you have to think even more about where/how to place them to give the upgrades to the animals you want.
(I LOVE DECK BUILDING MECHANICS)
The overall fighting mechanics are very satisfying, the various abilities are fun to play with, and the various enemies are fun to play against. The variety of minibosses and just enemies overall is quite big, and all change your way of approaching situations.
The harder difficulties are also EXTREMELY challenging, I haven't managed to beat "no-food-lost, fire, midnight" difficulty, but it's still extremely engaging and thrilling to play.
The feeling I got when playing this game for the first time, and still get pretty often when palying this game is so unique, it's relaxing but extremely intense and engaging at the same time, it's probably my favourite game with turn based combat
(sorry baldurs gate 3) and one of my overall favourite games of all time.
Final Score:
9/10
