The first song I fell in love with by
Kay, Okay Thanks was their track on
our friend's house... Vol. 2,
Fly With Me! The vocals sound so full and fun, the lyrics are stuck in my head more securely than my own birthday, and the song overall is just so fucking fun and whimsical while also feeling extremely grounded and real.
Altouggghhh... this entry is about their album
Side Effect May Include! The album is 16 tracks long, (One of which very short and silly but who cares it's still 16!) and has of variation between AND within those 16 tracks! I basically love the entire album, and everything in it.
But before I talk about specific tracks, first I wanna talk about the album in general. First of all,
Kay, Okay Thanks. is one person! 1! One singular person! Like their bancamp page says: "I Self produce and mix and write and play everything you hear!" which I find ABSOLUTELY INSANE! Their tracks sound like they are made by at least, AT LEAST 3 people, and the sheer cool-ness of their writing, vocals, playing, mixing is WILD! Like, I know it's not unheard of for people to be multi-instrumentalists, or just make really fuckin cool music by themselves, but I guess the type/genre/feel of a lot of the music that they make feels like it is rarely made by one person, and I think that makes the album, and their music in general very special.
Their voice is also so... emotional? Like I don't have any knowledge or whatever about what are "good" vocals, but the vocals of
Kay, Okay Thanks. just make me feel so much, which could just be personal preference ofc, but the way they use their voice on this album just feels so energetic and passionate, I really like it, especially the contrast between the roughness of
Hang The Drummer!!!!, the fragility/delicate-ness of
Television Show, and the more stern/raspy vocals of the middle part in
Side Effects the it's so good.
My favorite songs from the album are
Cincinnati for the swinging and catchy lyrics/vocals, and I absolutely love the part of the song with the lines "I don't know a thing about it, Take a trip to Cincinnati, Get a little sleep", that few second part of the song is sooo good.
Crystal Love for the funky guitar sounds and very cool delivery,
Until I Am Dead for the sort of slower and "harder" instrumentals and vocals
Brain Matter with it's very fun into and the sort of story telling through the entire song, which is something I really like in songs, and I also really like the funky keys in this song.
Hang The Drummer!!!! because I love how rough and fast and dirty it sounds, and with it leaning closer to punk (which I fukkin love) imo, and the sort of menacing tone throughout the entire song.
And lastly
Rip Current again for the story telling and the completely different vibe. Also the vocals in this track are so extremely emotional, they pull me through the song like I'm being pulled over a rickety bridge and through a rushing creek.
So yeah,
Kay, Okay Thanks. is extremely fucking cool, and this album has a lot of my favorite songs by them in it, and is a very cool and varied collection of extremely interesting and fun music
