The music of the week is:
Wie de fak is Sophie Straat
Sophie Straat
Sophie Straat (translating literally to Sophie Street) is an artist I've thoroughly enjoyed the work of for a very long time, with extremely memorable and empowering lyrics about things like police brutality, women getting intimidated on public transport, the bullshit of the dutch political system, and many more other topics.
And a few days ago she released her full new album after dropping a few singles the last few months, and holy shit it is so good.
The way this album plays with so many of my emotions so strongly is amazing, it's like the tracks were infused with pure rage, love, or hope, but I guess this just shows how good Sophie Straat and the other people who worked on these songs are at what they do.
And that with songs that go all the way from something you want to mosh to, to something you can cry into your pillow to, it's an amazing rollercoaster of songs that feel real.
Now for my favorites of this album, I'll try not to just put the entire tracklist here ^~^
Als hij dan echt bestaat - The first track of the album, which I absolutely love, and might be my favorite track on the entire album.
The entire vibe through the song is fucking amazing, it feels ethereal, but also vulnerable and just real at times.
The vocals are so passionate and the lyrics, while I don't have a 100% clear interpretation, still hit hard.
Liefdesliedjes - Girl, the first time I saw that Sophie Straat and Ploegendienst did a collab, I was so fucking hyped, and holy shit was my hype matched.
The vocals from Sophie Straat and Ray Fuego compliment each other so well, and Sophie Straat's voice sounds amazing accompanied by the hard instrumentals from Ploegendienst. I saw ploegendienst live a while back, and holy shit they're still one of my favorite live shows of all time.
And of course the lyrics are harsh and hard hitting, but also extremely poetic, which is to be expected when you combine Sophie Straat and Ray Fuego.
Dansen met de dood - I really fucking love this song, but it's hard to put into words how much I love it.
The line "Als we dan allemaal dood gaan, mag ik dan als eerste, of is dat asociaal" (translating roughly to "If we're all going to die, can I go first, or is that antisocial". It doesn't have the same ring to it like this but oh well) is so... heavy, idk how to describe it, the entire song is heavy, like, when listening to this song I feel like my brain has an extra bag to carry, the vocal performance, instrumentals and overall production are enchanting, I love it
Here you can find weekly tunes picked every other sunday by yours truly!
It might be a single track, an EP, an Album or an Artist, anything!
The music of the week is selected on the basis of whether I think it is cool.
I don't plan on making this a promotional spot, just a personal highlight.
The only thing I'll keep in mind is that I feature a new artist every week.
